I am thrilled to announce the 9th recipient of The Addolorata De Luca Leadership Scholarship, Tess Ogunjinmi. Tess is a first-generation Canadian who immigrated from Nigeria with her family to Canada. Tess states “my family immigrated to Canada in pursuit of better opportunities. This transition required adapting to a new culture and overcoming challenges that shaped my resilience, determination, and appreciation for hard work. Inspired by my family’s sacrifices, I strive to create meaningful change and give back to my community. My journey toward a healthcare career reflects my profound dedication to service, equity, and compassion.”

Tess, a second-year Nursing student at the University of Windsor, embodies the ADL Scholarship’s mission – honoring our ancestors while giving back to the next generation of student leaders. Her leadership and community involvement are extensive. Her contributions include volunteering with St. Vincent de Paul at Our Lady of the Assumption Parish, supporting students through the Womxn Centre at the UWindsor campus, tutoring within her faculty, and being a former Big Brothers Big Sisters of Windsor-Essex Mentor. Tess also serves as Secretary of the Canadian Black Nurses Alliance’s Windsor Chapter, advocating for equity and diversity in healthcare.

Tess envisions a future where healthcare systems are inclusive, equitable, and representative of diverse voices. Her passion for nursing stems from personal experiences witnessing systemic barriers in healthcare and their effects on underserved communities. She plans to continue her education, expand her advocacy, and inspire others to champion equity and compassion in every aspect of life. As an Outstanding Scholar at the University of Windsor, Tess conducts impactful research examining values, moral courage, and ethical intention among business students. Beyond her academic and advocacy pursuits, she channels her entrepreneurial spirit into SereneEssentials, her small business creating handcrafted candles—a testament to her creativity and determination.
