Our Journey to Canada

Meet Dr. Antonio Rossini. He is a University of Windsor professor and a proud Italian. He came to Canada in 1995 to pursue his MA and PhD in Italian Studies from the University of Toronto. He also obtained a post-doctoral Licentiate in Medieval Studies from the Pontifical Institute for Mediaeval Studies of Toronto. Dr. Rossini is a dedicated educator, humanitarian and a mentor to his students. While reflecting on his immigration story this is what he had to say.

"I was taught how to count, speak and love life by my grandmother, a woman whose memory I cherish every day. We also shared the same desire for self improvement and a similar taste for adventure. One day, after I finished my PhD, I was invited to an event where I noticed the crest of the Order of Canada and its motto: "Desiderantes Meliorem Patriam." "Wishing for a better fatherland." There it was. My grandmother’s suggestion when I left Italy, making her sad but also enormously proud. When I left she said something to me that I will never forget: "Go there to become a better you." I do believe that I strive for a better version of me, or at least I try every day. Canada is the best Fatherland of all, the land of our better selves!"
